The Slipstick
The New Dallas Sports Arena-AA Center Grant Simpson & Joe Laakman Lead Project Architects with HKS Architects-Dallas Presents a Virtual Tour of the New Dallas Sports Arena-AA Center
President’s Message October has arrived and finally some cooler weather. Our chapter is off to a great start this year, and I anticipate good things to come. Bert McJimsey has done a good job of lining out all of our programs for the year. This month's should be especially interesting, and we expect a large attendance since it will be a joint meeting with the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects. My thanks go to Jason LeRoy for helping get the Web Page going; it's coming together nicely. We have a new newsletter editor beginning next month; Leslie Redd will take Patrick Powell's place. Speaking of the newsletter, this year it is going electronic; you are reading the first edition of the web-published version. This should really enhance our ability to communicate to the chapter quickly and easily. Paper copies will still go out to those who desire them, but that form of distribution should rapidly decline. Stay tuned; I think you'll like the things our chapter is doing! Jeff Stewart, Chapter President Newsletter Name Competition This month we are having a little competition to come up with a new name for our newsletter (see BOG minutes). We are now publishing the newsletter primarily to the website. This changing format and our changing times (slide rules have become a thing of the past) warrant a new name. Please submit your idea for a newsletter name before the next BOG meeting (10/25); be sure to include your name. The Board of Governors will select the best newsletter name. The winner will receive a free dinner at our next chapter meeting (10/26). Send all entries to: Jeff Stewart, jeff.stewart@trane.com, 903-581-9157 (phone), 903-581-3280 (fax) September Chapter Meeting a Success We had a great meeting in September. The meeting was held at the UT Tyler Engineering Building. Lunch was served. After lunch, Jeff Stewart called the meeting to order and we had introductions of all those present. Bert McJimsey introduced our speaker, Dr. Troy Henson, Dean of Engineering at UTT. Mr. Henson gave an excellent overview of the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Tyler and predicted considerable growth in student population over the next few years. Following the presentation, we met the engineering faculty, and were given a tour of the various laboratory facilities at UTT. They have really come a long way in terms of facilities improvement since the inception of the engineering program, and have built a solid foundation in their quest to become a premier engineering program. Thanks go to the entire UTT faculty for all of their hospitality! Jason LeRoy, Chapter Secretary We are sad to report that local East Texas Chapter member, ASHRAE Fellow, and Life Member Warren Spofford passed away recently. His career and obituary are summarized below: Warren Spofford Warren Spofford was one of the pioneers of the Air Conditioning Industry. He was one of the first to build a unit that became known as the room air conditioner, using the old General Electric monitor top compressor and condenser from their refrigerator line. His early work was involved in determining the psychrometric properties of moist air, and he developed the original General Electric Psychrometric chart. Without these charts, calculating the loads and balances was a long and involved process. His early design work began with room air conditioners, which started the residential market. He later worked on units called Store Coolers, which were used to cool commercial spaces. Within the Air Conditioning Department, he became the expert on heat transfer and was instrumental in developing the many plate fin designs used by the department. Heat transfer surfaces back in the 40’s consisted of five 5/8" copper tubes brazed to a single row copper fin, these were then stacked in tube sheets to build the desired coil. His work led to the multi-row coils of copper tubes in aluminum fins. He also contributed to the calculations which resulted in General Electric’s spine fin surface which started with copper tubes but was quickly change to aluminum tubing which provided much better equipment life. He was a teacher and friend to many young aspiring engineers. Back in the early 50’s there were many new engineers coming into the business that had no air conditioning experience. He was instrumental in developing the famous Air Conditioning University Course which originally ran for 42 weeks. The material for the book was written by many engineers and is still considered a bible of knowledge today. He was a giant of the industry and will be sorely missed by his many friends. Written by Ed Kennedy Edited by Jason LeRoy Obituary Warren Spofford was born December 25, 1907, in South Groveland, Mass, and lived in Tyler since 1956. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and worked as an engineer for General Electric for 43 years. In 1935, he married Edna Horstman of Scotia NY, and they moved to Tyler in 1956. He devoted his entire working life to the development and refinement of the home air conditioner. He belonged to several engineering societies and was elected an ASHRAE Fellow in 1968. In 1991, Mr. Spofford was recognized for outstanding community service by General Electric’s Elfum Society, AR-TX-LA chapter. From the Tyler Morning Telegraph Edited by Jason LeRoy
September Board of Governors Meeting Minutes Following are the minutes from our Board of Governors meeting September 19, 2000. Jeff Stewart called the meeting to order at 11:58 PM at The Trane Company meeting facilities. In attendance were Patrick Powell, Robert Helt, Jason LeRoy, Steve Christopher, Bert McJimsey, Gene Branum, Bob Greendyke, Steve Hancock, Bill Stiles, and Jeff Stewart. Jeff Stewart – President New Business. Jeff asked if there were any corrections to the minutes from the previous month. The minutes were approved. We will try to get the September Slipstick ready for distribution via our web-page this month. Satellite broadcast of Standard 90.1-1999 was done on September 12. Jeff reported that attendance was low, but those who attended learned a great deal. Bert McJimsey will be in charge of the slide show at the monthly meetings. Bert McJimsey – Programs Bert gave an update of the program schedule. Plans are all set except for November and April meetings. We are considering having technical sessions before the monthly meetings. If anyone has any ideas for possible topics, notify Jeff Stewart. Steve Christopher – Membership Steve brainstormed ideas of how we could tap into new membership opportunities. A couple of items mentioned were local dealers and surrounding townships. Anyone and everyone are encouraged to offer ideas of how we could attract additional membership and participation. Bob Greendyke – Student activities Bob reported that he intends to encourage his students to enter the ASHRAE Student Design Competition. The topics will come from his thermal systems design, and senior design classes. Miscellaneous At the next meeting we will have an HVAC brain teaser/ quiz. It will be a few questions, multiple choice, and the winner will get to pick the person who has to make the quiz for the following month (he can pick himself if he wants). No pressure, this is just for fun. Consistent with being the cutting edge, progressive organization that we are, it has been decided that we will change the name of our newsletter. We would like a new image that is more reflective of the advances the industry has made since the advent of the slide rule **. This image shift worked for the Denver Broncos. Shortly after they changed uniforms, they dominated the 1997 and 1998 seasons. So too will we migrate into an era of greatness when we show our avant-garde colors. In order to ensure that we procure a truly exemplary and reflective name, we are holding a naming contest, in which everyone is encouraged to participate. Whoever comes up with the best name for the "Slipstick" will win a free dinner. The winner will be announced at the next meeting, and must attend the meeting in order to receive the prize. ** This move really makes sense, when you consider that a majority of the chapter probably doesn’t even know how to use a slide rule. Board of Governors will meet on Tuesday October 24, from 11:45-1:00 in room 210 at the Trane facilities. Jason LeRoy, Chapter Secretary 2000 - 2001 Chapter Program Schedule
