A History of the East Texas Chapter of ASHRAE

ASHRAE East Texas Chapter Roots
On June 19, 1961, shortly after the merger between ASHAE and ASRE, a group in Tyler, Texas petitioned the ASHRAE Board of Directors to form the East Texas Chapter. The Board responded by granting a charter on October 24, 1961.

The founding of the chapter was primarily due to the initiative of Frank H. Faust and Walter R. Yeary. At that time Faust was Second Vice President of ASHRAE. He became First Vice President the following year and was national President for the June 1963 and July 1964 period. During this period both Faust and Yeary were transferred by the General Electric Company to Louisville, Kentucky, and joined the chapter there. By that time the East Texas Chapter was well established and active.

Area Information
Headquartered in Tyler, Texas, we are home to two large air conditioning manufacturing facilities:  Trane and Carrier.  These are supported by several related businesses.  The area is rich in natural resources (oil, natural gas, lignite, iron ore, water), and electric power is abundant.

More than fifty percent of the nation's rosebushes are grown in the Tyler area and distributed from refrigerated warehouses; the city also has the nation's largest municipal rose garden.  Three major hospitals are located in Tyler.

A number of educational opportunities are available including The University of Texas at Tyler, Texas College, and Tyler Junior College (TJC).  Programs for air conditioning and refrigeration technicians are available at TJC, and The University of Texas at Tyler has recently added an engineering college.  Several Chapter members have served as part time instructors at either Tyler Junior College or The University of Texas at Tyler.
