President’s Message I was in dire straits after I came back from my vacation in the same week that we were having our monthly meeting. Not because of the stress of coming back to work but the thought that some of our members would not receive the newsletter in time to make their meeting arrangement. Indeed, some of our members received the newsletter one day after the meeting.
To prevent a similar event from happening again, our Editor Steve Hancock has agreed with me that we will make sure that each member gets the newsletter at least one week before the meeting. In the future, if you don’t receive the monthly newsletter seven days before the scheduled meeting date, please call Steve Hancock, or me. Meanwhile, all Chapter Chairs please remind your assigned members about our monthly meeting a couple of days before each meeting.
The National Engineers Week of 1998 is February 22 to 28. Please come to the Joint Engineers Banquet on the 27th of February to celebrate this event. As such, we won’t hold our monthly meeting in February.
See you at the Joint Engineers Banquet. Steve Chen
Chapter President, Steve Chen opened the BOG meeting at 11:05 on January 15, 1998. The November BOG meeting minutes were approved as published in the Slipstick. The general meeting report however was omitted so this will be included with the February Slipstick. According to ASHRAE, in most categories, our PAOE points are zero. Robert Helt says that regional Chairs are sometimes late sending in points. Committee Chairs should check on the status of their point tallies. The March meeting will be research promotion night. Research Chair, Tom Kennedy will publicize. Robert Helt suggests showing the ASHRAE research video at the meeting. Our ASHRAE chapter now is online with our own homepage. The Slipstick is currently on the website. Robert Helt suggests having past newsletters, pictures, officers, etc. on the site. Publicity Chair, Kilgo is the one to contact with ideas. Student affairs Chair, Bert McJimsey says that typically, Dr. O’Neill will bring a load of students with him from A&M. We will host the students on a tour of the factory. Bert also reports that he has some PAOE points that he has not reported. He thinks we'll be in good shape in this regard by year’s end. Nomination of two of our members to fellow status was unanimously approved. A special issue of the Slipstick will be issued to encourage members to attend the Joint Engineer’s Banquet in Longview. This is especially important as we will be hosting the banquet next year. The BOG meeting adjourned at 11:45.
Joe Kennenger of Alliance compressors presented an informative overview of scroll compressor technology. Surprisingly, the scroll compression concept is not new, having been around for almost 100 years. The great advancements made recently that have popularized the scroll compressors are manufacturing related. All scroll compressors currently in production employ fixed and orbiting scrolls, and motors pressed into the shells. Advantages of the scroll compressor include no valves, no re-expansion volume, and separation of suction and discharge areas of the compressor. These characteristics provide the opportunity for scroll compressors to have lower noise and higher efficiencies than reciprocating compressors. Most problems with scroll compressors have been in the bearings. Common safety features include internal pressure relief and motor overload protection.
Russ Cude introduced our speaker/presenter Jay Field who has a Ph.D. in Chemistry. He has had 2 careers in his life so far, one in Refrigeration Chemistry and the other in Plastic Materials, both in HVAC Systems. Jay’s topic focused on the application of plastic materials to indoor and outdoor HVAC equipment. He outlined the considerations involved in making successful plastic applications. These involve the environment, economics and agencies to name a few. There was feedback and discussion from the audience in the area of plastic drain pans related to Indoor Equipment. It was pointed out that plastic drain pans are used in the majority of all Indoor Equipment, especially when it comes to Residential Products.
