President’s Message Happy New Year! We have had three wonderful programs since the beginning of this fiscal year and my new year resolution is that we keep this momentum alive for the rest of the year. In the October BOG meeting, we decided to find a location for our Chapter home page on Internet. Thanks to Robert Helt, Gene Branum, and Jeremy Smith, we now have a site residing on Tyler Junior College’s network for our Chapter home page. Our Publicity Chair Richard Kilgo has volunteered to take care of this home page per ASHRAE standards. The CRC (Chapters Regional Conference) is four months from now. We had better start to check our PAOE (Presidential Award of Excellence) points. A report from the Headquarter of ASHRAE indicates that we have a total of 269 points (250 from the category of Chapter Programs and 19 from the Research Promotion). Chapter chairs please remind the Regional Vice Chair in your category of responsibility that we have done a wonderful job as soon as possible. Our January noon meeting will be held at the Trane Tyler facility. Come to join your peers in learning the latest about the scroll compressor technology. See you soon. Steve Chen
The Board of Governors meeting was opened by the chapter president, Steve Chen. The following members were in attendance; Robert Helt, Jay Field, Steve Hancock, Russ Cude, Gene Branum, Dick Cawley, Bill Stiles and Mike Wendt. The October minutes, as published in the Slipstick, were approved. President Chen pointed out that the current issue of the Slipstick shows the up-to-date status of PAOE points to keep the membership informed in this area. Toward this end, committee chairs should forward their points status to the Slipstick editor. Treasurer, Bill Stiles reported that the Chapter balance is $9242.00 which is on deposit at the Trane Credit Union. Russ Cude, Program Chairman, reported that his committee has accumulated 250 points to-date which appeared in the November Slipstick. Russ also gave us a brief up-date on future chapter programs as follows: -Scroll Technology is on tap for the Jan.’98 meeting. - The Feb. meeting will be the Joint Engineers Week Banquet as has been our tradition. - The Environmental Issues program by Jim Crawford that was planned for Mar. ‘98 probably will be postponed till May because Jim Crawford must be in India in March. Russ hopes to be able to get Richard Kilgo to present their ASHRAE Paper on Light Flicker for the March meeting. - The April Program will be on Frost Accumulation and will be presented by Dr. Dennis O’Neil, a professor from Texas A & M. Jay Field, Membership Chairman, reported that he sent in the PAOE points today and that his committee should have max. points by year end. He also reported that ASHRAE is mounting a membership retention drive and that most of our members have not officially paid their dues though many have sent them in. Jay has contacted about 1/2 of the chapters 93 members and reports that ASHRAE will give us a $100 bonus if we can get our unpaid list down to 50% by Dec. 31. Jay still plans to have the Membership drive in March ‘98. Mike Wendt reported that the Refrigeration Committee has accumulated 150 PAOE points including today’s meeting and these will be sent in following the meeting. Robert Helt, Arrangements Committee reported that the Chapter was not charged for the meal served at the November meeting because the food arrived late and UT refused to accept payment. They assured us that they would be a better job next time. Robert also reported that the East Texas ASHRAE website has been set-up for publication of club news and information. TJC has agreed to serve as host and will assist ASHRAE in setting up, servicing and maintaining the website. Our home page is www.tyler.cc.tx.us/ashrae/slipstic.htm. Robert reported that we will try to get the Slipstick out on the internet before the next meeting. Richard Kilgo our Public Relations Chairman will be our main contact concerning our Website. Bill Stiles, TEGA Committee Chairman reported that he is continuing to mail the inspection reports from the cities around East Texas which will net us more than par PAOE points for the year. Dick Cawley reported that Bill Stiles has agreed to be the ASHRAE chapter representative to the Joint Engineers Banquet Selection Committee. Bill is aware that this position leads to the job of Chairman to the 1999 Joint Engineers Banquet Committee. A motion passed to nominate Jim Crawford for ASHRAE "Fellow". Dick Cawley agreed to do the leg work and coordination involved to get the job done.
