I hope everyone had a great holiday season. Now it’s time to make a clean start for this New Year. Our last program of 1998 was a success. Many thanks to Program Chairman Tom Kennedy, Arrangements Chairman Robert Helt and Gene Branum for coordinating the tour of the TU Electric Power Generation Plant and Mining Operation in Henderson. I received lots of positive feedback. Gene Branum got me a nice Christmas present to commemorate the trip to Henderson. It is a yellow book titled "Following Directions for Dummies". I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of upcoming events this year: JANUARY: January 21st. Mr. David Lu of Alliance Compressors will be making an informative, one-hour presentation titled "Noise Control Design and Practice". January 23-27, 1999 ASHRAE Winter Meeting… …Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, 1999 AHR Expo…January 25-27…McCormick Place South FEBRUARY: Be sure to read about our chapter in the Insights article on Region VIII in the February 1999 ASHRAE Journal. The Engineers Week Banquet is February 26th. We have secured one Region VIII's "Distinguished Lecturers". Mr. Richard Charles, president of Charles & Braun Consulting Engineers in San Francisco, California will be the speaker. Mr. Charles is a seasoned veteran of the HVAC industry with more than 40 years experience. He has held many within ASHRAE, culminating with Society Presidency in 1992-93. Mr. Charles is an ASHRAE Fellow and has received the Society’s Distinguished Service Award. APRIL: Our chapter program April 15th will be "Highlights of the ASHRAE Winter Meeting". This is a repeat from last year since the program was so successful and informative to members unable to attend the Winter Meeting. The CRC (Chapters Regional Conference) will be held in Dallas April 29th through May 1st. If you have never attended a CRC, don’t pass up this opportunity. This is an excellent opportunity to meet fellow members, attend committee workshops and to have a good time! MAY: Our chapter program on May 20th will be "Tyler’s Economy" presented by Mr. Tom Mullins. This is also spouse night. I look forward to seeing you on January 21st. Regards, Russ Cude, Chapter President November BOG & General Meeting Minutes Russ Cude called the meeting to order at 11:25. The previous month’s meeting minutes were approved as written. Programs Report. Today’s program is the tour of the TU Electric mine and power plant. We expect at least 10 for the trip. The topic for our next program will be Sound and Vibration presented by David Lu. Gene Branum will check on getting a room at TJC for the meeting. Regarding future programs, we will probably cancel the other tour planned due to previous poor attendance. We may try to have a joint meeting with other societies. UTT has offered to host a meeting at their location. We may hold our April meeting there at noon. This may spur interest in a student chapter there and it would be a good time to award scholarships. TJC may host the March meeting. We need a list of societies and contacts to arrange some joint meetings. Branum may have a list. Helt suggested we try to hold the last meeting of the year at the lake. Research Promotion: Tom will try to get Trane's check by year's end. Joint Engineers Banquet Planning: Mike Ferran is making contacts for funding. Bill Stiles needs information on the speaker beforehand. Bill encouraged us to attend and sit at various tables to interact with the students. Contact with schools is going on. Some areas in which we can help are: funding, registration, program (need a master of ceremonies), awards presentation, greeting at the door, and publicity (if anyone has contacts, let Bill know). TJC will provide signs directing people to the banquet. Bill noted that, last year, each society did a mail-out to their members. It was suggested that Bill write a paragraph for the Slipstick to get volunteers for various activities. Helt moved that our Board authorize a contribution to the Joint Engineers Banquet and raise it from $100 to $200. The motion passed unanimously. New Board Member: Steve Chen is moving to Maryland. Cude moved to nominate Joe Hague as his replacement. The nomination was approved. Public Relations Report: Rhamy did not put anything in the paper this month because the information was not received in time. He needs the background of the speaker, etc. to get more interest. The information is needed by the first week of January for the next meeting. Historian’s Report: Nothing new to report. Cude expressed thanks for a good article in the last Slipstick. Newsletter Report: Need to check on updating the Website; Branum will check into the status. Education Report: Three members gave presentations at TJC recently. Helt gave UT Tyler students a tour of the Trane plant. We are doing well on points. Cawley suggested we count the meeting some had with UT Tyler professors. McJimsey met with UT Tyler about setting up a chapter; it looks promising. If we have a good Spring, we should get the maximum points in this area. Refrigeration Report: We are reporting points for the tours and meetings. TEGA Report: Helt needs to give Stiles a letter for two presentations that he gave. Other News and Notes: The ASHRAE Winter Mtg. is scheduled for Jan. 25 – 27. We need to circulate our minutes since no newsletter goes out in December. The meeting adjourned at 1:45 Jeff Stewart, Chapter Secretary
