President’s Message

I want to express a special thank you, on behalf of the entire East Texas ASHRAE Chapter, to Robert Helt and his wife for their selfless hospitality in allowing us to move the social and dinner part of May’s program to their home.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, May’s program "The Internet" was not presented. Responding to the lively interest this program generated, it has been rescheduled as a noon meeting on June 12, 1997 at Trane. Please contact Sheri Mclain to make reservations if you plan to enjoy the meal portion of this meeting. If you don’t plan to eat, come early and visit!

Eric Ballard of TJC will present the program, complete with live demonstrations and visual aids in Trane’s conference room #103. Major corporations from Trane to the Thrifty Nickel are establishing web sites on the internet. Eric will give insight and details on using (surfing) and working the information super-highway! It is astonishing to learn of the vastness of available information or how easily one can converse with other countries and cultures from the comfort and security of your keyboard!

Due to his extensive experience, Eric can answer your questions and expound on topics about which you would like more information. This will be a very audience interactive program, so come and participate, or listen if you choose.

See you there!

Dan

President-elect, Steve Chen called the Board of Governors Meeting to order at 5:10PM, May 15. Attendees were Joe Hague, Dick Cawley, Steve Chen, Gene Branum, Russ Cude, Tom Kennedy, Steve Hancock, Bert McJimsey, Jay Field, Mike Wendt, and Dan Pierce.

Steve Chen brought a fiery springtime campaign to a close when he presented the proposed 1997-98 officers list to the board for approval. The BOG approved the list unanimously. Extending their administrative roll, the BOG went-on to approve the April minutes as published in the SlipStick.

Steve Chen reported that the CRC in Corpus Christi was well worth the price of admission. According to Steve, the entire conference gave the East Texas chapter a standing ovation when Steve reported our 43% increase in attendance. Russ Cude, Jose Balderrama, Robert Helt, Mike Wendt, and Jim Crawford were also on-hand to receive the adoration of the CRC.

A couple of motions submitted by the Dallas Chapter were voted down at the CRC. The first limited participation on committees, and the second kept standards committee members from commenting on their own standards during public review. A third motion submitted by Dallas passed. This one requested help from HQ for better research database info.

Despite unanimous support from ALL of Mexico’s ASHRAE chapters, Dick Cawley failed in his bid for Nominating Committee Alternate. Steve Chen rallied from this disappointment to nominate Joe Hague as an ASHRAE Fellow.

On the financial front, Russ Cude reports that Region 8 is not getting its fair share of ASHRAE research funds. We are dead last in the allocation of this money. Also, Russ observed that larger chapters raise a lot of money with golf tournaments. The BOG agrees to table this fund raising proposal until a later meeting.

Mike Wendt observed that many chapters include a summary of their technical sessions in their minutes. Steve Hancock agreed that, barring such instances as bomb threats, he would try to include such information in the SlipStick. Also, Mike suggested that we notify nearby chapters when we are offering a program that could interest them. Mike learned that the San Antonio chapter earns PAOE points AND earns money by presenting all day seminars on technical issues for about $100/head.

On membership, Jay Field reported that maintenance of rolls is a major concern for many chapters. In his new role as Membership Chair, Jay pledges to recruit new members from places other than Trane including Carrier and manufacturer’s reps.

Student Activities Chair, Bert McJimsey reports that tonight, the East Texas Chapter will award two scholarships chosen from a list of 3 outstanding candidates.

Tom Kennedy reports that he has over-estimated the Research PAOE points. The current estimate is 401. Our chapter had two individual honor roll members: Warren Spofford and Robert Faulkner. TU Electric and Trane also made the honor roll.

Bill Stiles reported that we have $10,208 in our account. We will need much of this to host the CRC. Last time, this cost us about $6,000.

Historian, Joe Hague also had to downwardly revise his PAOE points to 75. Under the new rules, there aren’t as many ways to make points.

Due to a bomb threat, the technical meeting at the Trane Company was canceled. Robert Helt and his wife, however, generously invited everyone to their lovely home for the dinner and social part of the meeting.

Even with the abrupt change in plans, we had 28 people attend the meeting including 13 members, 6 students, and 9 guests.

Dan Pierce installed Steve Chen as the next president, Bill Stiles as the next treasurer, Russ Cude as president-elect, and Steve Hancock as secretary.

Steve Chen announced the names of the 1997/98 Chairpersons. They are:

Historian: Joe Hague

TEGA: Bill Stiles

Refrigeration: Mike Wendt

Student Act.: Bert McJimsey

Research: Tom Kennedy

Membership: Jay Field

Arrangements: Robert Helt

Programs: Russ Cude

Publicity: Richard Kilgo

Newsletter: Steve Hancock

Bert McJimsey presented Jerry Richardson and Phillip Grisham with $200 scholarship checks and certificates.

Robert Helt surveyed the audience and concluded that the members would like to have the Internet technical session rescheduled
