President’s Message:

Four very dynamic speakers: Robert Helt, Jay Field, Dick Cawley, and Bert McJimsey, led us through the highlights of the 1998 ASHRAE Winter meeting with their professionally prepared slides during our March meeting. I believe that everyone attending the meeting enjoyed the program as much as I did. Some of you have suggested that we do it again next year. And we will.

Our student members were missing from our March meeting because of the Spring break. I regret that we didn’t foresee such a conflict. As most of you may already know that we publish the yearly program schedule in October, and then revise it each month afterwards. I always hope that everyone could come to the Chapter meeting and I am willing to try my best to make the Chapter meeting convenient for you to attend. Next time, if any member sees a potential schedule conflict, please let us, especially, the Program Chair know. Chapter programs are for you, student members included, and please tell us when its schedule doesn’t suit you.

Mr. Leo Stambaugh, our Director and Regional Chair, attended our March meeting and program. He suggested that we get a distinguished speaker from the Society for the 1999 East Texas Joint Engineers Banquet, which will be sponsored by our Chapter and chaired by one of our members Mr. Bill Stiles. He also raised a concern that some members might have difficulties attending a chapter meeting held in a highly secured private company premises. We will address his concern in our April meeting seriously.

The April meeting is a joint meeting with the The Texas A&M student chapter of ASHRAE. Since they requested a plant tour of the Trane facility, it is more convenient for most of the participants to meet at Trane. However, we should try to meet somewhere else other in the May meeting.

See you soon in the April NOON meeting.

Steve Chen, Ph.D.

March Board of Governors Meeting:

This month we had the privilege of hosting Region VIII Director and Region Chair, Leo Stambaugh. He visited the East Texas Chapter as part of his tour of all chapters within his region. Leo suggested that we try to get an ASHRAE Distinguished Speaker for the 1998 Engineer’s Banquet that we are hosting this year. Bill Stiles will follow-up on this.

The January minutes, as published in the Slipstick, were approved.

Student activities Chair, Bert McJimsey reported that he has submitted 472 PAOE points to date. More are coming with Texas A&M visits, scholarships, member speeches, and sponsoring students to eng. Week. Chapter agrees to sponsor 2 scholarships this year as we did last.

Research promotion Chair, Tom Kennedy reported that he has 754 paoe points. This is well over par but $900 behind challenge.

TEGA Chair, Bill Stiles says that he needs to know about participation on handbook review committees so that we can get points.

Refrigeration Chair, Mike Wendt reported that we now have 275 points toward a 300 par. Jay Field and Robert Helt have reviewed some papers for ASHRAE that should get us some more points. Also Jason LeRoy’s presentation at the ASHRAE meeting in Toronto will accumulate further points.

Membership Chair, Jay Field reports that the March meeting is the second of our membership promotion nights and this will garner us some PAOE points.

President, Steve Chen reports that all chapter offices for next year except Secretary have been filled. Robert Helt and Dick Cawley will be the nominating committee.

Dick Cawley reports that everything except reference letters is done for our ASHRAE Fellow nomination.

Treasurer, Bill Stiles reports that we have $9415.71 in our checking account

General Meeting:

Leo Stambaugh encouraged us to attend the CRC in Tulsa to inform National of our members needs. Also, our district is trying to get chapters started in Monterey and Guadalajara. If we know any potential members in these regions, we should invite them to sign the charter petition.

This being Research Promotion night, Tom Kennedy presented an overview of ASHRAE research. 100% of the money donated to research goes to supporting ASHRAE’s 90 active projects. Our chapter’s donors to research are: Tom Kennedy, Robert Helt, Verde Eargle, Robert Mountz, Charles Dubberly, Byron Pyeatt, and Estes, McClure & Associates. In addition, our Honor Roll Donors are: Steve Hancock, Warren Spoffard, Robert Faulkner, and The Trane Co. On behalf of ASHRAE, Tom Kennedy expresses his undying gratitude to this year’s research donors.

In recognition of Membership night, Jay Field presented an overview of membership levels and benefits

Program Report:

Robert Helt, Dick Cawley, and Jay Field reported on the winter ASHRAE meeting and show held in San Francisco. All commented on significant changes that seem to be occurring at the show. These include a dramatic absence of displays by major manufacturers. Filling the void left by the absence of the majors was a myriad of small specialty company displays. This year there was also much emphasis on Indoor Air Quality and global issues of global warming and energy efficiency. Many manufacturers showed improved filters and heat recovery units. The public’s awareness of IAQ seems to be rising.

In addition to their reports on the show, the presenters discussed the various technical committee meetings they attended. Helt: electrical, Field: chemical, and Cawley: refrigeration and standards. Especially notable was that the controversial standards 90.1 and 62 have been placed on continuous maintenance so that they can be more agile in their evolution.
