Russ Cude, Dick Cawley, and Robert Helt represented the East Texas Chapter at the CRC in Tulsa last month. Our PAOE points presented at the CRC are summarized in this SlipStick. Overall, we improved over last year - especially in meeting attendance - a 25% increase! May 21st is our Companion Night. On behalf of the East Texas Chapter, I’d like to invite our chairs and their companions for a free dinner. This is just a token of our appreciation for what the wonderful job our chairs have done for the Chapter. Please make your reservations soon. New officers and chairs will be installed during this month’s meeting. Come join me to congratulate them. This month’s program, "International Environmental Issues", will be presented by Jim Crawford of the American Standard Company. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn about global issues that may effect what we are doing at home. This is the last Slipstick of this fiscal year. Your next newsletter will arrive in September. Hope you have a great summer! Look forward to seeing you at Tyler Junior College on May 21. Steve Chen, Ph.D. Welcome New Members! Please welcome Jason LeRoy of Tyler and Walter Guice of Longview as new members to the ASHRAE East Texas Chapter. Please also welcome Joshua Wilkerson, Jason Randall, Jeffery Dale Peters, and Dan Ross as new Student members. We are glad to have these new folks and hope to meet them at the May meeting at TJC. March Board of Governors Meeting: President, Steve Chen, reminded us that our regional membership dues should be paid. Bill Stiles will write a check covering these dues for all chapter members. President-Elect, Russ Cude, will be attending the CRC. Alternate, Tom Kennedy, will not be able to attend so Steve Hancock will try to go in his place. Newsletter editor, Steve Hancock, pointed-out the new tri-fold format for the newsletter. This format halves our printing costs and allows us to automate the time-intensive folding process. Feedback was generally favorable. Also, Hancock reminds all chairs that he needs PAOE points updates by the first of each month. Steve Chen reported that the Refrigeration has earned 325 PAOE points. Research Chair, Tom Kennedy, reports that we have accumulated 754 PAOE points. Dick Cawley reminded us of the Hot and Humid Symposium being held in Ft. Worth. To get the group rate at the hotel, reservations must be in by May 1. Membership Chair, Jay Field, informed us that the GE Motor Reps are dropping-out of our ASHRAE chapter. Also, his report from ASHRAE lists 10 delinquents in our chapter. Membership has 128 PAOE points. TJC Liaison, Gene Branum, reports that the ASHRAE scholarship applications are still out. Applications must be returned and scholarships awarded by the next meeting. TJC students enjoyed an ASHRAE sponsored tour the Trane factory in Tyler. President Steve Chen proposes that we allow Sheri McLain, our volunteer arrangements coordinator, as well as Committee Chairs and their spouses to eat free. The proposal passes. Program Report Dr. Dennis O’Neal and Dr. John Bryant presented a summary of their research on heat pump frosting and defrost. They have examined hydrophilic and hydrophobic fin coating’s effect on defrost performance. They have learned that the hydrophobic coatings can significantly increase run times between defrost without significantly increasing the defrost time. The improvement is most apparent at lower temperatures. Longevity of this effect is yet to be determined.Joe Hague Retires: Joe Hague (left) receiving his ASHRAE Fellow Certificate Longtime GE/Trane/Alliance engineer and ASHRAE Fellow, Joe Hague is retiring. Joe has been active in ASHRAE since 1971. He serves on TC 1.9, and is the our Chapter Historian. While Joe is leaving behind his 9 to 5, he assures us that he plans on remaining active in ASHRAE!
