Tom Kennedy (our program chairman) and I thought we would plan some "different" programs this year thinking we would generate more attendance. One of those was last month’s Skeeter Boat factory tour. We had a whopping total of FOUR members that came to the tour and dinner. Quite a few members could not make it due to a conflict with an important deadline. Other than the conflict, I’m not sure what the problem was. In spite of the down attendance, we all enjoyed the tour. Congratulations to Joe Hague. He was the winner of the keys to the bass boat. Hopefully, this month’s program will have much better attendance. Our program this month is a tour of the TU Electric Power Generation Plant and Mining Operation in Henderson. This will be a very interesting tour. We will actually go through a mine as part of the tour. Robert Helt located a mouth watering Mexican Restaurant nearby called the Jalapeno Tree in Henderson. We will have dinner after the tour. Please make plans to meet at the Trane Company lobby at 2:00 on November 19th. Special thanks to Gene Branum and TJC who will furnish us with 2 vans for the ride over. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Steve Chen good luck in Potomac, Maryland. He and his family will be relocating there this month. Steve has accepted a job as a consultant for a software company. Steve has been one of our chapter’s most enthusiastic and hard working members. He will be truly missed. Russ Cude, Chapter President August Board of Governors Meeting: Russ Cude called the meeting to order at 1:10 with Mike Wendt, Joe Hague, Bill Stiles, Rhamy Morrison, Bert McJimsey, Russ Cude, Jeff Stewart, Steve Hancock, Tom Kennedy, Robert Helt, and Dick Cawley in attendance. Minutes from last meeting were approved as written. Programs Report: Skeeter Boat tour may not have good attendance because of many conflicts. Next meeting will be an afternoon T.U. Electric tour. Leo Stambough will attend January meeting. We are getting points for having the whole program schedule for the year planned. Joint Engineer’s Banquet Report: Speaker will be Richard Charles, P.E. Need to select a place for him to stay. Organizational meeting tentatively scheduled next Thursday, 10/22/98. Newsletter Report: Editor needs all information no later than two weeks before each meeting (first Thursday of each month). Would like to include PAOE point updates, history articles, member news – any activities by individual members (e.g. John Doe spoke at TJC), and a program report for each month. Education Report: We have 10 student members as of today. We need a volunteer for 10/27 or 11/3 TJC engineering class. A couple of our members have already spoken to TJC. Public Relations Report: We have put out the first notice in the paper. Most radio and TV stations are receptive to broadcasting chapter notices, but they need info. two weeks beforehand and operate on a first come, first served basis. Tyler Morning Telegraph is also willing to give us news space if we just send them an article. Next year, we may consider doing something at the East Texas State Fair. TEGA Report: We can participate in the competition (engineering projects) for the Spring – not too late. If anyone gives a talk at a professional organization, we can earn points. Helt just gave two presentations and Cawley also gave some HVAC technical presentations. Historian Report: Can do some recall interviews of former or present members for points in this area, takes three interviews to qualify. Refrigeration Report: We have earned 50 points so far for McJimsey’s speech. Research Promotion: Letters should go out this month Other: Golden Gavel – important to make contact with the RVC’s periodically. Meeting minutes need to be sent to National headquarters as well as the regional Treasurer’s Report: Our account balance is $8597.68. Meeting adjourned at 2:10. Jeff Stewart, Chapter Secretary Chapter History: On June 19, 1961, 27 Engineers in the East Texas area signed a letter to the board of directors of ASHRAE requesting that a charter be issued to a new chapter- the East Texas Chapter, ASHRAE. The headquarters was to be in Tyler, Texas. The charter was granted, and even though the chapter has been one of the smallest in ASHRAE, it has always been extremely active in all areas of the chapter, regional, and national level. Besides filling the obligations of the chapter, members have participated in the regional activities and have served on committees, written Journal articles, participated in Handbook writing, technical committees, and attended in sizable numbers, the national meetings. We are proud of our accomplishments. Joe Hague, Chapter Historian Chapter News: On October 14, Steve Hancock spoke with the TJC Calculus II and Calculus III on the application of advanced mathematics in HVAC engineering. On November 3, Jeff Stewart gave a presentation to TJC Freshman Engineering class on The Engineering Profession and Ethics. |
