ASHRAE MEETING NOVEMBER 18, 1999

McKinney ISD Sustainable Elementary School Project

James D. McClure, P.E.

Consulting Engineer

Estes, McClure & Assoc.

This month’s program will be presented by James McClure, of Estes, Mclure & Associates, on a "sustainable design" project. Estes, Mclure & Assoc. was recently named "Engineering Firm of the Year" by PM Engineer Magazine. Also, the project that will be presented was named by the American Institute of Architects to the Earth Day Top 10 List for Environmentally Responsible Design Projects in the nation.

Sustainable design is environmentally sensitive architecture and engineering – the ability to meet today’s needs without compromising the resources available to future generations. Another major element of the design is called "Eco Education," a concept which incorporates the sustainable school into the curriculum so that students can understand its design and how it impacts the environment. Mr. McClure will discuss the design criteria, design, materials selection methods and criteria, sustainable survey of HVAC and lighting manufacturers, team approach in the design and construction, construction, and commissioning.

President’s Message

Many thanks to Mr. Jim Phillips for the excellent tour of TXU Energy Park in Dallas. And talk about an interesting tour, on display at the energy park were solar cells, wind turbines, and solar collectors. We saw each of these technologies in operation and were presented with the cost effectiveness of these technologies compared to current electrical costs. Also, thanks to Jeff Stewart for providing pictures of the tour. I would like to thank everyone for their efforts toward making every meeting a success…keep it up.

I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving. Gobble! Gobble!
