ASHRAE MEETING NOVEMBER 18, 1999 McKinney ISD Sustainable Elementary School Project James D. McClure, P.E. Consulting Engineer Estes, McClure & Assoc. This month’s program will be presented by James McClure, of Estes, Mclure & Associates, on a "sustainable design" project. Estes, Mclure & Assoc. was recently named "Engineering Firm of the Year" by PM Engineer Magazine. Also, the project that will be presented was named by the American Institute of Architects to the Earth Day Top 10 List for Environmentally Responsible Design Projects in the nation. Sustainable design is environmentally sensitive architecture and engineering – the ability to meet today’s needs without compromising the resources available to future generations. Another major element of the design is called "Eco Education," a concept which incorporates the sustainable school into the curriculum so that students can understand its design and how it impacts the environment. Mr. McClure will discuss the design criteria, design, materials selection methods and criteria, sustainable survey of HVAC and lighting manufacturers, team approach in the design and construction, construction, and commissioning. President’s Message Many thanks to Mr. Jim Phillips for the excellent tour of TXU Energy Park in Dallas. And talk about an interesting tour, on display at the energy park were solar cells, wind turbines, and solar collectors. We saw each of these technologies in operation and were presented with the cost effectiveness of these technologies compared to current electrical costs. Also, thanks to Jeff Stewart for providing pictures of the tour. I would like to thank everyone for their efforts toward making every meeting a success…keep it up. Tom Kennedy called the meeting to order at 7:50 AM at Dwayne’s restaurant. The previous month’s meeting minutes were approved as written. In attendance were Tom Kennedy, Robert Helt, Bert McJimsey, Jeff Stewart, Mike Wendt, Patrick Powell, Dick Cawley and Bill Stiles.
New Business. Patrick Powell and Jeff Stewart will check with other engineering societies about having a joint meeting in November. Aubrey Whitney is the ASHRAE web page master. Jeff and Bert will get with Aubrey to kick off the web site. Today’s Program. Program is a tour in Dallas at the TXU Energy Center. TXU will close the Center soon and tours will no longer be available. We will go to the resturaunt to eat after the tour. Jeff will pick up the bill on any student meals and Jim Phillips meal. Programs Report. Robert has set up the next meeting at the Carrier plant. Estes McClure will give the presentation. The Joint engineering meeting will be held at Letourneau University in Longview this year. Program not known yet. Patrick is checking on a mentoring program and will report back. January is Research and Promotion month. Next year we might get Bill Harrison and tour the hospital (chillers). The meeting adjourned at 8:35. Bert McJimsey, Chapter Secretary
