President’s Message

Well, the ballots are in and the results look great. No, I'm not talking about the elections (although that may apply depending on your viewpoint); I'm referring to last month's meeting which was a resounding success. Grant Simpson and Joe Laakman, with HKS Architects, gave an excellent presentation of the new Dallas sports arena, American Airlines Center. I'm sure we are all planning to snap up some of those luxury suites for the first season.

Plans for all of our remaining programs are now firmed up. Also, the Engineers' Week Banquet planning process is well underway; a committee with representatives from all participating societies in the area has met and made assignments. If you wish to participate, contact Bert McJimsey or Gene Branum; our responsibilities will primarily be to make personal contacts with local schools.

Please note a couple of other items of interest: a free pass to one day at the Winter Society Meeting and our newsletter naming contest (see the sections below). This month's meeting should be especially educational for those not directly involved in commercial building design/application; we will have a team presentation that follows the process from beginning to end for a local high school. Also, we are pleased to welcome Kenneth Fulk, Region VIII Chapter Programs RVC, to our meeting. See you there!

Jeff Stewart, Chapter President

We Need a Name! (Newsletter Name Competition)

We are continuing the competition to come up with a new name for our newsletter (see BOG minutes) because of limited response. We are now publishing the newsletter primarily to the website. This changing format and our changing times (slide rules have become a thing of the past) warrant a new name. Please submit your idea for a newsletter name before the next BOG meeting (11/14); be sure to include your name. The Board of Governors will select the best newsletter name. The winner will receive a free dinner at our next chapter meeting (11/16). Send all entries to:

Jeff Stewart, jeff.stewart@trane.com, 903-581-9157 (phone), 903-581-3280 (fax)

Free One-Day Pass

ASHRAE's National Board of Directors has distributed a pass for the Winter meeting to every chapter. This pass entitles one chapter member who has never attended the Winter Society Meeting to a complimentary one-day registration or $100 toward the full $240 registration fee. If you qualify and are interested, please contact Jeff Stewart. If there is more than one person interested we will have a drawing for the pass.

October Board of Governors Meeting Minutes

Following are the minutes from our Board of Governors meeting October 25, 2000. Jeff Stewart called the meeting to order at 12:00 PM at The Trane Company meeting facilities. In attendance were Jason LeRoy, Bert McJimsey, Steve Hancock, Leslie Redd, Joe Hague, and Jeff Stewart.

Jeff Stewart – President

New Business.

Jeff asked if there were any corrections to the minutes from the previous month. The minutes were approved.

October Meeting: We discussed last minute plans for the October meeting, and addressed concerns that attendance is looking to be small. Leslie Redd will get a contact at UT Tyler to better facilitate communications to students about the meetings.

Engineers’ Week: Bert informed us that our role in Engineers’ Week will be a person-to-person contact with the schools. It will be determined which schools we will be responsible for covering. This will involve finding and inviting those students who are possibly interested in an engineering career.

Outreach Program: After Engineers’ week, we want to establish a formal outreach program with students and teachers at the junior high or middle school level (7th-8th grades). The purpose of this outreach program will be to promote engineering to kids at an early age.

Website: We reviewed the website, and got some feedback from those in attendance. We will add a section that details ASHRAE committee involvement of our East Texas members on a national level.

First time ASHRAE meeting attendees: Jeff received a "$100 off" coupon for use at the ASHRAE national meeting. The coupon can only be used for first time attendees. Those interested in obtaining the discount are encouraged to contact Jeff Stewart, Phone: 903-581-9157, Fax: 903-581-3280, Email: jeff.stewart@trane.com.

Newsletter: Leslie Redd will take over responsibility of the newsletter in place of Patrick Powell.

New name for The Slipstick: Jeff only received one idea for a new name for our newsletter. For this reason, he has decided to extend the renaming period by one month.

Lifetime Members: Two East Texas Chapter members have advanced to "Life Member" status. They are: John Royes, Jr., and Joe Hague. Congratulations to John and Joe. Your dedication to the society has been recognized.

ASHRAE Fellow: East Texas Chapter member Jim Crawford has been named ASHRAE Fellow. This is one of the most prestigious and distinguished awards given by ASHRAE at the society level. It is long overdue for Mr. Crawford, but congratulations are in order. Well done Jim!

Jason LeRoy, Chapter Secretary

    October Meeting Minutes

October’s meeting was held at the Trane conference facilities. We had an excellent chicken and beef fajita dinner.

After dinner, Jeff Stewart called the meeting to order and, following brief announcements, we had introductions of all those present.

Bert McJimsey introduced our speakers, Grant Armann and Joe Laakman, Principal Architect and Vice President, respectively, of HKS Architects in Dallas. Grant and Joe gave a very detailed presentation about the design and construction of the American Airlines Sports Center. Some of the details they outlined include:

  • Cost - $325 million, Public/Private Funding ($125 million by city)
  • Tenants - Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars (Plus specialty events)
  • Size - 840,000 Square feet on 5 levels
  • Seats - 19,200 Basketball; 18,000 Hockey; 20,000 for shows
  • Luxury Suites - $125,000 - $300,000 per season
  • Completion - Summer 2001
  • Tons of refrigeration - 4300 (ice and HVAC)

If you missed this meeting, then you missed an excellent presentation. We were very fortunate to have these gentlemen take the time to drive out from Dallas to talk to us about this project. A big thanks go to Grant and Joe!
