President’s Message

Our October meeting was another great success - 31 people attended the meeting which is 55% higher than the average in 1996-1997. This high attendance is made possible, among other things, by having a good program, publishing the newsletter SlipStick timely, announcing the program on both Trane’s newsletter and Tyler newspaper, and having members calling members. Many thanks to our chairs as well as those who helped, especially, Sheri McClain at Trane, for contributing their time and effort to our Chapter.

I am very impressed with the progress that the School of Engineering, under the leadership of Dr. Hale, has accomplished in such a short period of time in the past by starting, practically, from scratch. I believe that some of us may become the engineering students at the University of Texas at Tyler in the near future.

Our Tyler Junior College student chapter is well established and attracts new members each year. Thanks to Professor Gene Branum in sponsoring a student chapter of ASHRAE in the past 10 years. In the October meeting, our membership and Student Activity chairs Jay Field and Bert McJimsey have pointed out the benefits of being ASHRAE member. And I am convinced that many student members must have realized those benefits first hand as evident from one TJC graduate who is now an engineering student at UTT asked me how to continue his membership. As far as I know, he can become a student member of ASHRAE as soon as an engineering faculty at UTT is willing to sponsor a student chapter. We hope it will happen soon.

Our November program provides another great opportunity for us to learn more about the plastic application. Hope you will take advantage of it to enhance your professional skills.

See you soon.

Steve Chen

Steve Chen opened the meeting with 24 in attendance by introducing our 1997-1998 officers and reminding members of our policy of providing free meals to students and guests.

Refrigeration Chair, Mike Wendt described his role in our chapter. His primary job in ASHRAE is to disseminate technical information. This can be accomplished through chapter meetings, technical seminars, and joint meetings with other engineering societies.

Russ Cude offered an introduction to the program chair’s role in ASHRAE.

Having sampled the wares at dinner, we were all eager to don our hairnets and see how the ice cream was made. The Brookshire’s plant employs mostly ammonia based refrigeration primarily for its remarkable versatility. From a common compression and condensation section, the refrigeration plant is supports three distinct evaporator temperatures of ice-cream making. The lowest temperature station maintains the plant’s "hard freeze" room at -40F. This facility, with a mere 25 production employees, makes 50,000 gallons of ice cream per week in 3 grades and 25-30 flavors. They supply all of Brookshire’s stores.

Our October meeting will be a Membership Promotion meeting. Members that bring a prospective new member will receive a voucher for both of their meals. We are looking forward to seeing some new faces as well as the familiar ones.

Each month we receive an accounting from ASHRAE Headquarters of member status. This accounting shows all changes - address, phone number, membership status. If you have moved, changed jobs or phone numbers please inform ASHRAE Headquarters, so your profile can be updated. As you might expect this accounting also shows member payment status. At this time about half of our East Texas Chapter members have paid their dues. If you have not already paid your dues, please do so as soon as possible!

26 attended student ASHRAE member, Eric Ballard’s, re-scheduled June 12 presentation on the internet. Eric first presented a brief history of the internet from its inception as the AARPANET, through its popularization with Netscape, to the burgeoning new media that we know today. Eric showed us how to get free e-mail (www.hotmail.com), to talk to friends far away (www.tribal.com), to get up-to-the-minute sports information (www. espn.sportszone.com), news (www.cnn.com), and weather (www.region56.com/special/doplarge.htm). Eric also showed us several sites offering various services and professional organizations (www.ashrae.org and www.tx.nrcs.usda.gov/eng/index.html). For those new to the Internet, Eric’s presentation was an outstanding introduction, and a few East Texas hackers in the audience even picked-up a tip or two.
