President’s Message:

The East Texas Chapter got off to a good start with our September meeting. The program was informative, the meal and accomodations were very good and we had 4 guests. Many thanks to Dr. Bert McJimsey of the Trane Company for his presentation on alternate refrigerants in the HVAC industry. I heard several people comment on what a good program it was. We as professionals will have some interesting assignments in the next 10 years phasing-in these new refrigerants.

I also want to thank our newest chairman, Rhamy Morrison (Publicity Chairman), for accepting this position. I know he will do an excellent job publicizing ASHRAE in East Texas.

Tom Kennedy has lined-up an interesting program this month. We will be touring the Skeeter Boat manufacturing facility in Kilgore. This will be membership promotion month. Don’t miss this opportunity to tour of one of the most reputable boat builders of its kind. Afterwards we will have dinner at David Beards Catfish King.

On December 3, we plan on having a dinner at the Chez Bazan Downtown Tyler - Plaza Towers. Please send in your RSVP soon.

See you in Kilgore.

Best Regards,

Russ Cude

September Board of Governors & General Meeting:

Russ Cude, chapter president, called the meeting to order at 11:00. Attending were: Tom Kennedy, Jay Field, Robert Helt, Bert McJimsey, Russ Cude, Steve Hancock, Joe Hague, Jeff Stewart, Bill Stiles, Gene Branum, and Rhamy Morrison.

Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved as written.

Publicity Report: Rhamy Morrison was introduced as our new Publicity Chairman.

Insights Article: Russ proposed a summary to submit for our chapter. He reviewed it and solicited suggestions for changes or additions. Russ plans to get with Dick Cawley to discuss society level participation examples. Russ will send a copy of the proposed to everyone for further review.

Russ asked Rhamy to write an article (advertisement) on upcoming meetings or activities. He should notify Tom Kennedy each time one appears in order to document the points.

Robert suggested checking with the TV and radio stations as well. There may be public radio or public access cable channel opportunities that would be free.

Joint Engineers Banquet: Russ reminded Tom that we need to communicate with McMillan regarding a speaker for the banquet. Tom will follow up. Bill Stiles noted that he will be meeting next month with all of the societies involved to begin planning the event. Russ asked Bill to let us know how we can help prepare for the event.

Membership Report: We have designated our October and March meetings as membership promotion events. Both of these will be tours.

Student Activities Report: Gene Branum described the Introduction to Engineering class at TJC. They try to bring in different speakers from the engineering discipline. He asked for volunteers to come and discuss what engineers do in their jobs. Bert will coordinate the scheduling with Gene of anyone who wishes to speak.

Gene also suggested we participate in some breakfast meetings with engineering students. These provide a more informal setting where students can ask visiting engineers about their work.

Student chapter formation at UT Tyler. It was noted that Dr Greendyke is looking at the possibility of forming a student chapter. He has a lot going right now with the new engineering program there, so this may not be one the highest priorities for him right now.

TEGA Report: It was suggested that we use our "Winter Meeting Highlights" program for the "Unity" category.

Programs Report: The October meeting will be a tour of the Skeeter boat plant. We will try to schedule it for late afternoon and possibly have dinner on the return trip.

The November meeting will be a tour of the TU Electric facility in Henderson. We will need two large vans for the trip. Attendance will be limited to the capacity of these vans.

Jeff Stewart, Chapter Secretary

Program Report

Dr. Bert McJimsey of the Trane Co. gave an excellent presentation on the introduction of R-410 to the residential HVAC industry. Dr. McJimsey combined refrigerant history and chemistry with global science and politics to give attendees a clear picture of the why, where, when, and how of the new refrigerant phase-in. Dr. McJimsey also discussed some of the service aspects of R-410 including oil handling and expected guage pressures.
