President’s Message

We had our 1997-1998 kick-off meeting on August 21, 1997 at Trane Company. We appreciate Trane Company's support to the East Texas Chapter of ASHRAE.

This was the first noon business meeting in our Chapter history. We had good attendance and accomplished a lot in one hour and half. I appreciate the help from Sheri McLain for ordering pizza, Jose Balderrama for taking meeting minutes, and Richard Kilgo for bringing in our guests from the lobby.

Our Chapter activities have been managed very well in the past by means of the PAOE (Presidential Award Of Excellence) program. I believe that we should continue to support this program and make it work for us. All the current Chapter chairs should be very familiar with such a program. For those who'd like to know more about PAOE program, please contact me or Chapter chairs.

Our September meeting will be held in the Brookshire's Ice Cream plant in Tyler. After dinner is served, we are going to have a plant tour (and some ice cream, too?) Thanks to Program Chair Russ Cude, and Arrangement Chair Robert Helt for their planning effort. I expect that we are going to have quite a few quests from Tyler Junior College, The University of Texas at Tyler, and The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler - just to name a few. So, please join me to show them our warmest welcome in the September meeting.

Steve Chen

The meeting was called to order at 11:50 AM, August 21, 1997. Attending were: Steve Chen, Tom Kennedy, Bert McJimsey, Joe Hague, Dan Pierce, Dick Cawley, Mike Wendt, Gene Branum, Russ Cude, Jay

Fields, Richard Kilgo and Jose Balderrama.

Minutes were read and approved with two corrections: Attendance number was added and mention that the speaker is a student ASHRAE member.

Steve Chen distributed a handout on PAOE criteria and each of the chair responsibilities were reviewed. Key points discussed were: Program- evaluation form must be submitted before points are awarded; Membership - Must identify two membership nights and write evaluation form; Newsletter - needs to add financial statement, summary of technical session, and PAOE update from all members.

Chairman’s Reports:

Program chair Russ Cude presented a summary of 7 planned programs for this year meetings. Four are noon meetings. Several suggestions and recommendations were made and Russ will take them in consideration for a revised schedule.

Membership chair Jay Fields requested that membership nights were designated the months of October and March.

Publicity chair Richard Kilgo plans to publish meeting and program announcement in T-Mail and Current Air publications of the Trane Co.

Refrigeration Chair Mike Wendt plans to make par on PAOE points this year.

Tom Kennedy, Research Promotion chair, plans to attend kick off meeting.

Berth McJimsey, Student Activities, suggested that we plan well any contributions to Student Activities so they can be better used and since PAOE are provided for these contributions. He also suggested that we get professionals in research, design, etc. to talk to the students.

Joe Hague mentioned that the PAOE points are a great way for Society to guide the Chapter in doing the right things.

Steve Chen made a motion to select a committee which will find and nominate a person to chair the Joint Engineers Meeting in 1999. Motion was approved and Dick Cawley, Gene Branum and Joe Hauge were selected for this task.

Steve Chen said that the UTT Eng. Dept had requested a list of local ASHRAE members for use of sending information about their services. It was suggested that this list may be property of the National Society and that a better approach was to allow UTT to write an article in the newsletter.

On Society Business, Steve Chen mentioned that the chapter monthly report can now be downloaded from an FTP site.

Dick Cawley accepted a job as a member of the Golden Gravel Committee for region VIII.

Meeting was adjourned a 1:05 PM.

Jose Balderrama

The School of Engineering at UT Tyler now offers a Master of Engineering degree. The degree program is structured to serve the continuing education needs of practicing engineers in the northeastern region of Texas.

Each degree candidate must complete a minimum of 36 semester hours which include:

• A maximum of 9 semester hours of approved advanced undergraduate engineering courses (not including courses taken in a prior undergraduate degree program)

• A maximum of 12 semester hours of approved graduate courses from mathematics and computer science

• A minimum of 15 semester hours of approved graduate engineering courses

• A maximum of 9 semester hours of approved graduate courses from accounting, finance, or management

• A six semester hour Engineering Project including the production of a professional quality engineering report

A specific degree plan must be developed and approved by the engineering graduate program administrator before the student completes 16 semester credit hours of course work to be applied to the degree. The engineering graduate program administrator will act as advisor of record for all Master of Engineering students. Students with inadequate undergraduate preparation may be required to take additional undergraduate courses to mitigate the deficiencies. It is recommended that students without approved degree plans consult the program administrator regarding their academic background and preparation before enrolling in a specific graduate engineering course.

A description of the graduate engineering courses is available on the web at www.uttyl.edu. For further information or for answers to specific questions, future course offerings, etc., contact Dr. Leonard Hale, Dean of Engineering. (E-mail lhale.mail.uttyl.edu , Voice 903-566-7002, FAX 903-566-7148) The School of Engineering at UT Tyler is located in an interim facility located at 3410 Varsity Drive, immediately across the street north of the Cowan Performing Arts Center on the UT Tyler campus. Stop by for a visit. Normal office hours are from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday.
