President’s Message:

The East Texas Chapter Board of Governors, Officers and Chairmen met on August 20, 1998 to kick off the 1998-1999 year. We reviewed the plans and goals for the upcoming year. I want to thank of the attendees (we had 100% attendance) for participating and sharing their plans and ideas. This year we will concentrate on four key items:

  1. Attendance

  2. PAOE points

  3. Engineer’s Week/Banquet on 2/26/99 (ASHRAE is the host chapter this year)

  4. CRC Attendance in Dallas 4/22 through 4/24/99

Please note the meeting dates in the newsletter. I strongly encourage the members to make every effort to attend all meetings. Our program chairman, Tom Kennedy, has lined up some very good speakers and tours. We will also have a social/dinner this year on December 3rd. The details are in this month’s Slipstick. Please RSVP to Sheri McLain at 591-3391 or fax to 581-3280 by October 1st.

I also want to encourage the chapter chairmen to report the PAOE point status to the RVC’s each month. This will make the regional chair’s jobs easier and will keep you disciplined to stay on top of your duties. Also, give the regional vice chairman a call and introduce yourself. They may have some ideas for PAOE points.

ASHRAE is the host chapter for the National Engineers Week Banquet this year. Bill Stiles has done a great job getting all of the arrangements lined up for next February. We need to work as a team to help Bill with all of the grueling leg work that is required to make this a successful event. We hope to have one of ASHRAE’s "distinguished lecturers" as a speaker. Make plans to attend.

Lastly, I want to encourage you to attend the CRC (Chapter’s Regional Conference) which will be held in Dallas next April. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other regional ASHRAE members and to learn about our various committees at the workshops. It is also an opportunity to have a good time!

Russ Cude, Chapter President

August Board of Governors Meeting:

Russ Cude called the meeting to order at 11:50. In attendance were Dick Cawley, Jay Field, Steve Hancock, Russ Cude, Mike Wendt, Bert McJimsey, Tom Kennedy, Jeff Stewart, Bill Stiles, and Robert Helt. Russ expressed thanks for everyone’s voluntary efforts as officers and presented some handouts summarizing his vision for the year.

PAOE points. With the CRC’s focus on PAOE points; these can essentially become our objectives. We must turn in the forms on time every month. Each Chairman should develop a plan for at least achieving Par in his point area. Russ will distribute a copy of the points guideline to all the officers.

CRC. The CRC is in Dallas this year; officers should attend and help us achieve the most points we can in this area. The "Presidential Activity" this year is for Visibility: "For media attention in newspaper, radio, or TV inspired by the local chapter to inform the public about who ASHRAE is and the contribution the Society makes to the quality of life." We should put some specific emphasis in this area.

We have until April to build points; it will be much easier if we work on it throughout the year. There is really no reason to score zero in any area this year. One key is to turn in our information on time.

Golden Gavel: Dick Cawley discussed the Golden Gavel Award. Just about every chapter in Region 8 wants it. The chapter is judged in 13 categories. These are generally the same as the PAOE categories, but with different relative scoring. Higher percentage categories are: research (11%), membership promotion (11%), attendance (11%), Regional Vice Chairman’s evaluation (11%), chapter programs-especially technical sessions (9%), newsletter quality (8%), attendance to CRC–on a man-miles basis (8%).

One of the more important Golden Gavel factors is to get reports in to the Regional Vice Chairman on time. Visibility with the Vice-Chairman is very important because of the emphasis placed on his evaluation. Dick recommended we set a date each month for Chairmen to meet to complete the reports, compile, and mail them. We also should ensure that the judging committee knows what we are doing (e.g. newsletters). Dick will pass along who the committee members are.

Dick sees things like PAOE points and the Golden Gavel Award as important. "If we are going after points, we should be doing the things a local chapter is intended to do. In other words, we’ll be doing those things for which a local chapter even exists."

TEGA: Bill Stiles pointed-out that TEGA points are much more slanted towards technology projects now. Bill feels that an important aspect of the local chapter is community involvement, but this no longer earns points. We should air this issue at the next CRC. Bill and Robert Helt will discuss a project that may achieve some points in the TEGA category.

Dues: We discussed chapter dues. These must be paid on time. This was a problem last year.

Joint Engineers Week / Banquet. We are the host society this year. Russ talked to Hugh McMillan about getting a distinguished lecturer. To be sure we get a speaker, Tom Kennedy will send a letter to Hugh with information on a time and date very soon.. Bill Stiles said that conflicts with school activities have reduced attendance. The date is already set, but we should be aware of this.

We need to start planning for the event now. Bill will provide a list of what needs to be done and when; he needs everyone to be involved. The date for the banquet is Feb. 26, 1999.
